Carrie

Carrie obtained her Master's Degree in Musical Theatre from The Boston Conservatory. She has experience teaching singing, dance, gymnastics, cheerleading, jazz and musical theatre. For three years she performed on and choreographed for The Spirit of Boston.

Carrie, what is the best part about teaching for Family Music Makers?

The best part about teaching for FMM, (besides the children!) is the FANTASTIC repertoire. It is professionally recorded, with complete instrumentation and vocalists who can actually sing! The whole family can have a truly musical experience when listening to FMM CD’s!

Being a part of the FMM faculty has been so important to my life. Every day that I teach there is always something new and exciting to look forward to! The first time a baby moves to the beat, the first time a child sings out loud in class, and watching the delight on everyone’s face when they know they’ve just done something musical!

Laura DeGiacomo
Senior Teacher
Laura

Laura D. DeGiacomo received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Emerson College with a secondary concentration in Dance. Laura is a member of Actors Equity Association and is a proud founding company member of the Village Theatre Project.

Laura, what makes teaching for Family Music Makers valuable to you?

The diversity and variety of music on each  CD gives a wide selection for kids and parents alike to become exposed to.

As a teacher, I love being able to watch the kids grow from week to week, month to month and sometimes even year to year.  Seeing them reach certain "milestones" of development and knowing I was somehow a part of it, is a very rewarding experience.

Where to begin??!!

A)  It is a great way to meet other families in the area.

B)  It is a wonderful and safe environment for kids to interact with each other.

C)  It is a great way of introducing the concept of a "classroom" and help build on basic music skills as well as social skills.

D)  It is a lot of fun to sing, dance, have fun, and be silly with friends and family!

Colette Gagnon
Collette

Colette Gagnon received her Master's Degree in Opera from Longy School of Music. She appeared as a soloist Key West Symphony's Solfest and two years with the Nashville Opera Chorus. In September 2001, she sang " America the Beautiful" for the closing spot on Nashville’s NBC nightly news.

Colette, why is teaching for Family Music Makers special to you?

I think what sets Family Music Makers apart from other programs is the energy of our teachers and the quality of our recordings, each authentic to their genres.

The children bring so much joy to my life as they discover music and life during class.  Each child is so amazing and brings so much happiness and laughter to my day.  It's like nothing I have ever experienced.

It is a truly unique program that offers families a chance to experience music and dance with children of mixed ages.  By combining children of various ages, the children are able to learn from each other and parents are able to make music class a family experience.  Also, our recordings include a diverse range of children's songs from many cultures and are always authentic to their musical genres.

Family Music Makers has truly changed my life. Teaching class brings me so much joy. Thanks to Family Music Makers, I smile all day long and can't stop talking about what happened in class each day.

Additionally, she studied music at the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria and at Susquehanna University.

Emily, why do you enjoy teaching with Family Music Makers?

We offer so many wonderful genres of music - from Jazz to Klezmer to Classical to Rock-and-Roll and everything in between.   Our music is entertaining for both children and adults.  Our teachers are well trained and we share ideas and teaching experiences.  We bring a many diverse and interesting ideas to the class.

I enjoy bringing music into children and family's lives.  I get to be creative in my lesson planning.  I LOVE music and LOVE working with kids! I cherish the relationships built with the children and families.

It is fun for the whole family. You will be exposed to all types of music and all types of fun!  It is also a great way to meet new families and make new friends.

Sarah Caissie Provost

Sarah Caissie Provost is a Ph.D. candidate in musicology at Brandeis University, studying swing-era jazz. She has a B.M. from the University of Hartford in flute performance. She is the second flutist in the New England Philharmonic and also teaches and performs popular dances from the Jazz Age throughout the New England area.

What do you enjoy most about teaching at Family Music Makers?
I love to see the children grow musically during their time with FMM. I especially love when a previously shy, quiet child breaks forth with a steady beat and sings along. It always seems to happen so fast! I also love that I get to spend my days singing, dancing, and surrounding myself with fun, energetic families!

Why do you think it is important to expose children to music at a young age?
One of the great things about FMM is that our music exposes kids to music from a variety of cultures. We can't start teaching our children about diversity too soon. Plus, music and dance helps children with motor and social skills. Most importantly, though, music is just FUN!

How has your career led you to become part of the FMM teaching staff?
I have a degree in music, but it was really my love of dance that led me to FMM. I started teaching dance and movement at summer camps, then moved on to teach at area schools. I loved to share dance and music with kids, and FMM turned out to be a great place for me to continue doing just that.
